chrusty

chrusty

Chrusty. Light as air pastry bow ties, which can be either savoury or sweet. (The secret – a splash of vodka!) It’s the fail-safe recipe of Lena Goldstein, the oldest grandmother in this project, who’s still baking aged 98… Lena’s also haring something she’s written -- her memories of a friend who didn’t survive the Warsaw Ghetto Uprising, 74 years ago this month. “There is nobody alive who remembers his full name. Even I only know him by his first name: Heniek.”

Cohen

Cohen

Leonard Cohen has left the world enriched with his songs, poetry, spirituality, great personal charm and wry humour. He was both a Zen Buddhist monk and a committed Jew, so we prepare his favourite Friday night meal. To the recipe of one of the Food is Love grandmothers of course. Click to find out what it is.

Kipfli

Kipfli

We go the Full Yeast, with part II of the recipes of Melbourne grandmother and baking maven Baba Schwartz. She bakes the bread, cakes, rolls, crescents, and pockets she learnt growing up in Hungary. So this week, it's Walnut and Poppyseed crescents and Cheese pockets. Sooo good!

tomatoes and pomegranates

tomatoes and pomegranates

The oldest man in the world prepares to have the barmitzva he missed out on at 13. Holocaust survivor Yisrael Kristal has just 113 -- so his barmitzva will be a century late! Plus 2 fabulous Turkish vegetarian dishes - tomato and pomegranate salad and 'Turkish bride' soup. An unusual mix of tastes and stories this week!

vines and seeds

vines and seeds

A break from the usual format this week, with a feature about a Palestinian project collecting heirloom seeds, to stop them disappearing from local fields -- and history. Plus a recipe for (vegan) stuffed vine leaves, which always taste best when you pick them fresh from the fields. Summer pleasures on Food is Love.
